Teaching on Spirits: Day 32

Testing and Discerning of Spirits

To test means "to try".

Ya know, like how someone says, "Try me like I'm playing" or "I wish somebody would".

To discern is to perceive or recognize something; distinguish.

Now, often times through life you gain wisdom from your experiences and others which allows you to better discern certain situations, etc. But here when we speak of "discerning of spirits" this is not a discernment that is gained simply by growing in the faith. It is in fact a spiritual GIFT and the body of Christ would do well to ask for it as there are many spirits wreaking havoc in our lives and we think it's cuz Pookie and 'nem don't know how to act.

"7Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8To one there is given through the Spirit the ...distinguishing between spirits..." (1 Cor. 12:7-10, BSB)

For example, as a result of this gift (which I operate in), I've been able to help the church I serve (and individuals in life) come to a better understanding of what is needed for them to access the life God has available to them. This especially helps when people are still reeling from past hurts and there are divisions and unforgiveness abounding, as is often the case in many of our churches, homes, communities, etc.

"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world" (1 John 4:1)

With the gift of discernment it's easier to test the spirits as you come to know the source of what's being said / done and then you use that in conjunction with what is being said / done (i.e the fruit of the particular spirit).

Much like there is evidence of the fruit of the Holy Spirit in our lives, love, joy, peace, etc., such is the case for any other type of spirit.

Think about it this way. You can know a person's name, but if you don't know their character then you really don't know them. In not knowing them, you cannot test them and understand who they are...or why they are.

This also means that we must hold to close scrutiny in and everything that is said and done in the name of Jesus, having a bountiful dose of grace and mercy available as well.
